INTRODUCTION Darwinian Theory of Evolution by Natural Selection Background information Even though evolution is an ancient concept, Charles Darwin brought up a new idea focusing on naturalistic modification of a population over time. He believed that species differ over time and space. In other words, after a period of time creatures undergo genetic mutations in their genetic code in which the beneficial mutations are preserved and the disadvantage mutations are eliminated. This concept he termed as natural selection. According to natural selection, all species have common ancestry and their diversity comes as a result of descent modifications. However, others are also determined by environmental factors. Lastly in differential survival and reproduction, creatures having traits that are well suited for survival in face of struggle for resources will likely form the next gene ration of that species while the rest will be gradually eliminated. Natural selection influences the frequency of traits over generations in three main ways. First, the traits passed to the generation may remain the same. Secondly, the traits may be altered in successive generation following a specific direction. Lastly, the species may undergo disruptive selection where the extremes are favored at the expense of intermediate traits. Purpose of the Lab Activity The main purpose of this lab activity was to demonstrate the process of natural selection and its subsequent effect on the frequency of traits within a population. The study focused on the behavior of predators prior to the extinction of preferred prey and later after the introduction of alternative prey. It seeks to provide an answer to the main research question stated below.
